Thursday night certifications
When the ZLA Pilot Cert Center was introduced, thought was given to the idea of having regularly scheduled ATC to facilitate pilot testing. For the initial rollout last year, however, we kept it simple and utilized adhoc staffing. That is, pilots would simply take note of who was online at a given time, and then request a rating if they saw a controller working the appropriate facilities.
This has actually served us very well, with no apparent dissatisfaction from the pilots that have participated in the program, most likely because, by and large, ZLA is staffed fairly frequently.
Now that Virtual Continental has partnered with ZLA, there may well be an influx of new pilots awaiting an opportunity to attempt their ratings. Furthermore, we recognize that it's often more interesting to have several pilots undergoing the testing at the same time, resulting in simultaneous operations at John Wayne (KSNA), Ontario (KONT), and Burbank (KBUR).
To that end, ZLA will attempt to provide consisting staffing on Thursday evenings (Pacific time) for pilot certifications. To be clear, while a pilot can request a rating ANY TIME a controller is providing ATC service in the appropriate areas, we would like to draw as many pilots as possible on Thursday evenings. The presence of pilots is likely to draw more students away from LAX, and into the other tower roles, resulting in a fun experience for all involved.
