Transcript: VFR flight in Bravo Airspace

N132KT: SNA_GND, Piper 132KT VFR departure to the northwest with the weather

SNA_GND: Piper 2KT, Orange County Ground, VFR dep to the west approved, fly hdg 220, maintain VFR at or below 2500 until advised, dep freq 121.30, squawk 0326.

N132KT: hdg 220, at or below 2500, 121.30 and squawk 0326 for 2KT

SNA_GND: taxi to rwy 19L

Reaching rwy 19L, we swap over to the tower.

N132KT: John Wayne Tower, Piper 132KT ready at 19L for northwest departure

SNA_TWR: Piper 2KT, John Wayne Tower, rwy 19L cleared for takeoff

N132KT: cleared for takeoff, 2KT

After taking off and reaching a safe altitude, we turn to hdg 220 and await further instructions.

SNA_TWR: Piper 2KT, contact departure

N132KT: over to departure, 2KT

We dial in 121.30 and make the call...

N132KT: Socal departure, Piper 132KT climbing through 500.

SNA_APP: Piper 2KT, socal departure, radar contact, resume own navigation

N132KT: own nav for 2KT

We make a right turn and follow the shoreline towards LAX. Once we're clear of the surface based Charlie airspace, socal gives us the boot. We hadn't asked for flight following, so he has no reason to keep us on frequency.

SNA_APP: Piper 2KT, remain clear of the Charlie, resume appropriate VFR altitudes, squawk VFR, freq change approved

N132KT: so long, 2KT

We squawk 1200 and monitor Socal approach (LAX_APP) to get a feel for what's happening over there, since we'll be talking on that frequency soon. A few miles south of LAX, while below the 5000ft Bravo airspace shelf, we contact Socal Approach to request our first Bravo transition, the Shoreline Route

N132KT: Socal approach, Piper 132KT is type Piper Warrior, 5 miles south LAX at 3000, request Shoreline Route to the northwest

LAX_APP: Piper 2KT, socal approach, reset transponder, squawk 1305

N132KT: squawking 1305, 2KT.

LAX_APP: Piper 2KT, rdr contact 4 south LAX. Cleared into the Bravo airspace, proceed via the Shoreline Route, maintain VFR at 6500, LAX alt 30.12

N132KT: up to 6.5 on the Shoreline Route, 2KT

After being treated to a spectacular view of the departures off our right wing, Socal unceremoniously says goodbye

LAX_APP: Piper 2KT, leaving the Bravo in 1 mile, squawk VFR, remain clear of the Bravo, freq change approved.

N132KT: Thanks, g'day, 2KT

Well, that was so much fun, let's head back to the south, but via the Mini Route this time. The chart calls for us to contact SMO_TWR if they're online, otherwise we should call LAX_TWR directly. Let's assume we're now a good distance north of LAX, northeast of the shoreline, at 6500ft. We no longer have a Bravo clearance, so let's get below the 5000ft Bravo shelf, then head towards LAX in the descent.

N132KT: Los Angeles Tower, Piper 132KT is type Piper Warrior, 10 miles northwest 3500, request Mini-route to the southeast, then a circle back to land at LAX

LAX_TWR: Piper 2KT, Los Angeles Tower reset transponder squawk 0310, alt 30.12

N132KT: 0310 for 2KT

LAX_TWR: Piper 2KT, rdr contact 9 NW LAX, cleared into the Bravo airspace, proceed via the Mini Route at 2500, advise when you're inbound to land.

N132KT: into the Bravo at 2500, we'll advise inbound, 2KT

Once we cross over LAX to the southeast, having completed the rather artificial task of doing the Shoreline Route, immediately followed by the Mini Route, let's tell the tower we're ready to put her down at LAX.

N132KT: Tower, 2KT we're done with our maneuvers, we're inbound towards LAX.

LAX_TWR: Piper 2KT, thank you, enter left downwind rwy 25R, I'll have your sequence shortly, I have a number of inbounds for 25R

N132KT: wilco, 2KT

KAL001: LAX Tower, Korean One Heavy, 5 miles out for 25R

LAX_TWR: Piper 2KT, can you make short approach?

N132KT: affirm, 2KT

LAX_TWR: very good, Piper 2KT, make short approach, rwy 25R cleared to land, traffic on 4 mile final, a heavy 747, keep your speed up

N132KT: short approach, cleared to land 25R, 2KT

LAX_TWR: Korean One Heavy, tower, traffic on base to final, a Warrior, rwy 25R #2 cleared to land

KAL001: in sight, cleared to land 25R, Korean One Heavy

Keeping a higher than usual approach speed to minimize our time spent on final, thereby avoiding becoming a hood ornament for the 747, we land at LAX...

LAX_TWR: Piper 2KT, where do you park?

N132KT: GA on the south side, 2KT

LAX_TWR: Piper 2KT, exit left without delay, cross rwy 25L then contact ground .65

N132KT: cross the left, then gnd, so long, 2KT

Basking in the glory of nearly sending a 747 around, we contact ground after crossing the runway as instructed.

N132KT: LAX ground, Piper 132KT, clear of 25L, taxi to GA parking

LAX_GND: Piper 2KT, ground, taxi to parking

N132KT: Piper 2KT, wilco
